Sleep is one of those things that you only think about when you know that you’re not getting enough of it. Or maybe you’re getting too much? Either way you’re cranky, irritable, and you desperately want to be able to say that tonight you’re going to get it right. However, if you’re not sure how much sleep you really need it can be tough to work out a plan of attack for that perfect, blissful night. Take in these facts and then see if you can pinpoint what you need to do to get the best night’s sleep of your life.
It Varies with AgeFirst of all, you need to find a night where you have no bedtime and you don’t need to get up in the morning. This can be tough, but it’s important to establish how long you’ll sleep when you’re left to yourself. Try not to pick a night when you’re already extremely tired. The reason that you have to establish what your new normal is is that, simply put, it might not be what you remember it as. Teenagers need the most sleep of any age range, and then after that people on average sleep less and less. It could be that you feel so groggy because you’re always trying to get yourself to sleep “enough” when you could actually use an hour or so less shut eye to feel your best.
Napping Is a Great Thing
If you have the option to take a short nap in the day, don’t turn it down. Taking an hour to refresh is far from a bad thing, and can even lead to you getting a second wind in the afternoon. This can lead to you being alert and active later in the day, meaning that you have more usable hours that you can devote to important things like working from home. If you try to go all day without recharging you’ll be really wound down by the time you try to hit the hay at night, and your evening will be much less productive than it might have been.
Listen to Your Body
Your body knows how sleepy you are, and when you should wake up. If you find yourself suddenly awake early in the morning, fight your way past that first layer of drowsiness and stay up. It could be that you’ve been oversleeping; your body might feel better when you go to bed earlier and wake up earlier. If you ever have a hard time falling asleep, don’t struggle too much; if it’s not going to happen, get up and try to make your time into something really productive. That’s going to leave you feeling better than tossing and turning all night would, and you’ll be in a much better place for working the next day. Don’t make sleep a stressful thing even accidentally.

Though it does vary from person to person, the typical range of sleep times varies between six and nine hours. If you’re getting less or more sleep than this, you might want to consult a sleep lab to see if anything is happening while you sleep that might make your nights less restful than they should be.
